Welcome to PostAc!
This is a platform to help PhD graduates more easily transition from academia into industry roles. At the moment, PostAc is showing you historical data only – you can no longer apply for any of these jobs as they were advertised in 2015, but they give you a good idea of what jobs will be available on our live version, which will be available next year.
Exploring these jobs gives you a good indication of the breath of work possibilities there are out there for you – far more than you might think! Be creative in your search terms: words like ‘advocacy’, ‘telling stories’ will help you find jobs that might be close to your values, or the skills you like to use the most. When you find a job that’s intriguing, use the ‘jobs like this’ button to refine your search. When you have found a job that interests you, have a look at the ‘compare’ and ‘advice’ tabs for information that can help you make a decision about whether this kind of job is right for you, or whether you need to refine some other skill sets to be a compelling candidate.
We were inspired to create PostAc by working with so many graduates and post docs who would like to work outside academia, but have no idea where to start looking for a different kind of job. The PhD was a degree designed to train academics, but our higher education systems can no longer absorb all PhD graduates. Many graduates are under-employed and looking for meaningful work that will use their research skills.
Our research has shown that 80% of employers looking to hire people with high level research skills do not mention the PhD as a qualification, showing a lack of employer awareness of what PhD graduates have to offer in terms of skills and abilities.
This is also why when you search for a job on a conventional job website with PhD as a qualification, you only see academic jobs. Most of the job market is hidden from you!
The PostAc platform makes this hidden job market for research skills visible. Our machine learning natural language processing technology can sort job advertisements by research skills intensity and display them to the user with a ‘nerdiness’ score.
The platform shows you a range of information about the most in demand skill sets, including location data and trends over time. Post Ac will enable you to find jobs that utilise your research skills and abilities. On PostAc you can learn what skills are most in demand so that you can tailor your studies to help you be competitive in the future job market. Eventually we hope PostAc will provide a way for employers to directly contact graduates with job offers that might interest them.
So welcome, have a play around! We’ll be watching what you do to determine which features to keep and what can be further developed. Thanks for helping us make this important step in product development so that we can bring a better service to you.
